My boyfriend, Whitecaps FC defender, Jordan Harvey, just received the honour of being awarded Humanitarian of the Year and has inspired me to become more involved in supporting the community as well. It was an easy sell when we were asked to attend the Canadian Cancer Society’s pumpkin carving day with the families of children who have or are now in remission from cancer.

Once we arrived we were greeted with smiles and excitement from the genuine, dedicated staff plus ten joyful families all gearing up for some good old fashioned pumpkin carving. I guess it’s been a while because we quickly learned all the new tricks and carving techniques of this generation, like cut the bottom instead of the top so you can set the shell over the candle. Who knew?!

When we all were satisfied with our unique jack-o-lanterns, we took a moment to express our gratitude for allowing us to spend time with these remarkable children.

The kids, all decked out in their adorable, I mean scary, costumes, gathered at our feet for a little pow wow. I am a singer and Jordan plays the guitar, so we did a couple songs for the room. Two very fitting songs….”Titanium” and “Amazing”.

The kids, families, and staff were so gracious even though I got a yawn from one of the sweetest little four year olds I had ever met. She gave me a good laugh. Her mom was pretty teary eyed after our performance and shared that she sings “Amazing” to her daughter every night before bed. Of course, then I was the one in tears.

The gift of this day was priceless for us. It makes you see the big picture and really appreciate the things that matter most: family and the support of the community.

We already begged to be invited next year but hope in the meantime we can dedicate our time once again to the Canadian Cancer Society in whatever way possible. Thank you for allowing us to be part of this special day and for your contagious smiles. Hope to see you all again soon!
